"The viewer is required to keep looking into the image to find that what initially appears a non-descript interior scene is in fact infused with pop art gestures; rendered through bold lines, primary colours and ben day dots which give the image an illusion of depth and texture."

Lichtenstein in his Bedroom (1991) woodcut and screenprint, from his acclaimed Interior series, manages to take a mundane interior scene and create intrigue around it. The depiction is of an everyday domestic interior purposefully rendered as bland and unimaginative: it is so familiar it could be our own room. We see the corner of a bedroom with some simple home décor, including the armrest of a rocking chair, a bed and two windowed areas.
Lichtenstein adds his characteristic pop colours to punctuate the everyday interior scene – a forest green curtain pared back from the window pane, a colourful framed composition hangs on the wall, the barely visible armrests highlighted in bright yellow. The artist purposely plays with perception: the viewer is required to keep looking into the image to find that what initially appears a non-descript interior scene is in fact infused with pop art gestures. The image is rendered through bold lines, primary colours and ben day dots which give the illusion of depth and texture.
Bedroom is part of the Interior series, which Lichtenstein based on furniture advertisements he cut from the yellow pages and old telephone directories: the artist utilises the familiar interiors to satirise American consumerism, society’s obsession with portraying a quotidian domestic perfection and mass culture of the time. Through re-appropriating such an everyday image, Lichtenstein invites viewers to reconsider the boundaries between high and low culture.
