Roy Lichtenstein Forms in Space (Corlett 217)
"Pop Art looks out into the world. It doesn’t look like a painting of something, it looks like the thing itself." Roy Lichtenstein
Roy Lichtenstein’s Forms In Space was created in 1985, commissioned for the Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art’s annual theme-based fundraiser, celebrating national emblems and morals. It is a signed screenprint on BFK Rives paper from an edition of 125. The artwork which depicts a pop rendition of the American flag, illustrates Lichtenstein’s importance in the American art movement by that time, as only significant others before him, such as Jasper Johns, had attempted to portray the American motif.Whilst on initial glance the viewer recognises the American flag in it, there is something rendered differently: slanting and upping the number of stripes and inverting the colours used in the upper left corner, replacing the flag’s iconic white stars with rows of simple blue ben-day dots placed against a white background. Despite these slight alterations, the blocks of uniform colour and flat surface planes make the composition an easy one to recognise. In this mechanised interpretation of the flag, Lichtenstein dissects traditional ideas of viewer and perspective.Lichtenstein’s pop art characteristics are immediately visible: bold primary colours, big ben day dots, solid block contouring. With this deliberately subversive take on the American flag, Lichtenstein parodies American mass media and the fragility of national iconography; by calling the print, Forms in Space, he simultaneously highlights society’s need for universal symbols and themes, capturing the spirit of the 80’s era he created it in.The blurred line between illusion and reality is often a theme in Lichtenstein’s works; Forms In Space depicts his skill at reinventing iconic imagery, illustrative of the ever evolving nature of contemporary art. -
