Nude in the Woods was the first time Lichtenstein had featured nude figures in his artistic portfolio, and he later went on to dedicate an entire series to female nudes, (see Nude series, 1994) one of art history’s oldest forms of representation. Nude in the Woods, a signed print edition of 50, also resembles motifs found in German Expressionist masterpieces.Nude in the Woods, one of seven prints from the Expressionist Woodcut series, explores the emotive essence of character rather than the figurative form, which was the basis of the German Expressionist movement. Lichtenstein had evolved his techniques, since his 50’s, 60s era dramatic portrayals of idealised comic book blondes, to these abstracted female figures.The depiction of the nude female form is immediate; the female figure, reminiscent of Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, is stranded in the centre of the image shaded in light blue, graphite and forest green background. However, it is somehow not her figure that draws in the viewer’s eye, but the emotional interior suggested by her facial features. Challenging the art historical trope of the idealised nude as serene and sexually naive, Lichtenstein portrays her as awkward, distraught, even psychologically trapped by the only value she feels she has to offer: her female form.Apart from the print title, Lichtenstein gives the viewer no context on her scenario; we can assume she is alone in nature, armoured with nothing but her own vulnerability. -
