    'In Peace Through Chemistry I, Lichtenstein not only evolves his own pop art vision but challenges traditional notions of high and low art culture in an artwork that ultimately pitches nature against machinery.' 

    Roy Lichtenstein’s Peace Through Chemistry 1, 1970, is part of his five part series (four prints, one bronze plate), Peace Through Chemistry in which he ultimately questions the role of humanity against industrialism, still prevalent today. The series comprises new printing materials and techniques explored for the first time by Lichtenstein. 
    Peace Through Chemistry I is a signed lithograph and screenprint on special arjomari paper and like the rest of the series takes the form of a triptych: the three panels are demarcated through dominant outlines and flat areas of primary colour. The triptych takes the form of a narrative starting with natural imagery, graphic shapes and concluding with scientific motifs, such as the profile of a man holding a test tube on the far right. 
    Lichtenstein’s pop art signatures are discernible; solid blocks of colour, bold patches of ben day dots, delineated outlines yet the artist in this intricate composition also introduces cubist techniques that gives the print new complexity. 
    In Peace Through Chemistry I, Lichtenstein not only evolves his own pop art vision but challenges traditional notions of high and low art culture in an artwork that ultimately pitches nature against machinery.
