‘Pollock really invented something. No one painted like him - or de Kooning or Still.’ Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein’s Red Lamps, 1990, is a signed print edition of 60 created from lithograph, woodcut and screenprint. Red Lamps, 1990, takes the same everyday interior object as his later Red Lamp print of 1992, but puts it in the context of a larger suburban domestic scene as part of his Interior series.
Familiar interior motifs, a sofa, a glass surface table, two bedside size tables and a large background windowpane create a homely picture punctuated by these two bright red lamps. The artwork is characterised by a highly stylised aesthetic: the Jackson Pollock artwork hung on the right hand wall illustrates Lichtenstein’s consideration of art history and pop art’s place within artistic traditions. Fusing his signature techniques of bold contouring, solid blocks of colour with diagonal stripes and ben day dots, the, at first glance, familiar scene is rendered with new dimensionality and texture.
Lichtenstein continues to play with the viewer’s perception, distorting features to keep us engaged in the domestic set up. Without the effects of shading, we cannot decipher whether or not the room is illuminated by natural light from the window to behind the sofa or by the two red lamps after which the artwork is titled. Further distorted play between light and perception include the red stripes of the sofa that conflict with the angled perspective because they lie flat along the surface of the picture plane.
These distortions and tensions are what elevate Lichtenstein’s pop art interior scenes of everyday subject matters into complex visualisations still so relevant today.
