    Roy Lichtenstein’s signed screenprint, The Living Room, 1992, is a sophisticated, multi-layered commentary on American society and the commodification of art and everyday life.
    The initially familiar looking interior scene, reminiscent of suburban American domestic life, features typical modern home décor, including armchair, table, lamps, a windowpane and even a referential pop art print in the background, so characteristic of Lichtenstein’s artwork. However, Lichtenstein uses his visually dynamic renderings to transform the mis-en-scene: bright pop colours, bold graphic lines, ben day dots create an illusion of depth and texture. The artist fuses conceptual ideas with his technical skills to create a distinctive Interior print that explores the boundaries between fine art and design. 
    In The Living Room, on closer inspection, a scene that appears so comforting and familiar hints at a narrative far more ominous: Lichtenstein plays with the viewer’s perception creating a tension that goads an onlooker to reinterpret the print over again.
