    Meaning & History

“Each of these cultural icons is also a commercial icon, a logo, the symbol of a corporate identity. Each is also an artistic creation from which the artist has been erased.” Greg Metcalf

In 1981, Andy Warhol created the work Dracula for his Myths series, a collection of ten screenprints of fictional characters. These characters are drawn from commercial icons that are vital to the history of American entertainment and that form the foundation of American culture.

In this work, the menacing figure of Dracula emerges from the shadows, revealing his razor-sharp fangs and creating a sense of unease. His pointed ears and pronounced cheekbones are highlighted by a pink gradient, which starkly contrasts with the dark shadow that frames his face. This technique of overlaying bright, contrasting lines to emphasise facial features is a hallmark of Warhol's style. The depiction of Dracula is based on a still from Tod Browning’s 1931 film Dracula, which featured one of cinema's most notorious and recognizable villains.

Warhol's interest in Dracula began in 1974, when he and filmmaker Paul Morrissey collaborated on Blood for Dracula, a satirical film that parodied various Dracula tropes with homoerotic elements and graphic violence. Since its release, Blood for Dracula has achieved cult status. Warhol’s nickname "Drella," a portmanteau of "Dracula" and "Cinderella," reflects his pale complexion, gaunt appearance, and nocturnal habits, and likely influenced his choice to depict Dracula. Following Warhol’s death in 1987, Lou Reed and John Cale, former members of The Velvet Underground, released an album titled Songs for Drella in his honour.
