    One of six images and three states in the Nude series, Two Nudes (1994) continues Lichtenstein’s exploration of female figures in his later career: unlike traditional depictions of nudes in history, these women are not based on live models but are inventions. Taking his comic girl characters from the 60s but undressing them, Lichtenstein adopted new techniques in this later series: whilst still using hand cut stencils (which produced imperfect dots and the repetitive pattern of the stencil itself), he began worked with Swan Engraving to create computer generated dye-cut stencils for the dots and patterns.
    Similar to Roommates, Two Nudes sets an interior scene of two females but what exactly is the nature of their intimate union? Only one is visible as she tenderly consoles the other. These are female figures stripped, revealing both their erotic availability and subordinacy, in a cultural zeitgeist obsessed with females as both commodity and object of desire. As if we the viewer are encouraged to engage in voyeurism of these female figures, we observe them through reflections, shadows or even an open windowpane in the background.
    With new all-over red coloured dots in saturated patches and clear white grounds, these later paintings newly play with notions of three-dimensional space, form and texture. Unlike the earlier works often crafted from singular cartoons, these scenes are created from a composite of women drawn from multiple panels.
