"There’s a discordant, colliding quality to the visual vocabulary of the print which almost evokes the complex, layering of sounds in jazz which Lichtenstein enjoyed throughout his life".

Roy Lichtenstein’s Still Life made in 1968 is a screenprint on aluminium panel that was a commissioned work for The Metropolitan Scene portfolio, which featured five prints by well-known contemporary artists in a limited edition of 50. Spearheaded by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s education department, the portfolio of prints was created for circulation to high schools around the country as part of their outreach programme.

Divided in two by a black line, the print - which borrows stylistic references from Cubism, Art Deco and Constructivism - comprises an amalgamation of assorted shapes. Geometric flowers and leaves feature Benday dots which seemingly evoke seeds in the sunflower’s disc floret, whilst heavy black outlines define the leaves’ grooves at the bottom of the print. There’s a discordant, colliding quality to the visual vocabulary of the print which almost evokes the complex, layering of sounds in jazz which Lichtenstein enjoyed throughout his life.

The circular shapes seen throughout in the curve of a green plant, a black swirl, a trail of circles and curled flowers give the artwork a rhythmic motion, almost like the mechanical elements of a machine. Whilst the image is teeming with activity, multiple artwork methods and techniques, Lichtenstein’s careful curation of the components give the print a methodical and harmonious balance.
