"Waterlilies with Japanese Bridge is Lichtenstein’s reimagining of Claude Monet’s much loved garden area in Giverny, outside Paris, still a magnet for garden watchers today."

Waterlilies with Japanese Bridge, 1992, is Lichtenstein’s reimagining of Claude Monet’s much loved garden area in Giverny, outside Paris, still a magnet for garden watchers today. Monet transformed it into an Asian inspired oasis, so a Japanese bridge brims with wisteria above a pond of water lilies as the daffodils and primroses start to appear in the grand alleys and gardens. Lichtenstein takes these famed motifs and reinvents them through his own visual language, although he once told an art critic, ‘it probably takes me 10 times as long {to do one of the paintings} as it took Monet to do his.’
As one of his later artworks, Waterlilies with Japanese Bridge encompasses many new techniques and print styles Lichtenstein had been developing throughout his career: in Waterlillies with Japanese Bridge he works with screen-printed enamel on processed stainless steel which give depth and texture to the artwork. Monet’s recognisable artwork is reinvented with reflecting metal and abstract combinations of organic shapes, black diagonal and framing lines, and red, green and blue ben day dots.
The intricate composition and texture of the print gives it depth but still retains the humour and playful spirit so synonymous with Lichtenstein’s pop art career. We, the viewer, can ascertain its references Monet’s famous work but on each gaze, the collage style becomes like an optical illusion open to multiple interpretations.
Waterlilies with Japanese Bridge is one of the most celebrated of this series as Lichtenstein shows new sophistication, in how he broke traditional art barriers, by reordering and abstracting recognisable images for them to be seen in new ways.
