Roy Lichtenstein Red Lamp (Corlett 279)
"Red Lamp, 1992, by Roy Lichtenstein is based on everyday furniture advertisements of the early 90’s American consumerist landscape and his own photographs, which aim to elevate the mundane through the prism of his distinctive pop art form."
Red Lamp, 1992, by Roy Lichtenstein is based on everyday furniture advertisements of the early 90s American consumerist landscape and his own photographs, which aim to elevate the mundane through the prism of his distinctive pop art form.Inspired by modern home décor objects, each vision of domesticity is rendered in characteristically bold primary colours: here the image is cropped to put the red lamp in close-up with two other interior items – chair and small table – as if to highlight these everyday objects as iconic symbols of contemporary culture. By focusing the lamp in red tones, against the black and white graphic lines of the other furnishings, Lichtenstein creates depth and tension within the framework. Centring these everyday furnishings within the bright pop yellow frame invites us to examine the visual beauty inherent in these everyday design features and to contemplate how these objects shape our environment.Simultaneously parodying pop art - the art form he became so synonymous with - Lichtenstein in Red Lamp also highlights and parodies the consumerist culture of the American landscape he was working in. -
