Roy Lichtenstein Reflections on Brushstrokes (Corlett 242)
“I like the idea of the brushstroke on (printed canvas), and then with reflections it is even better. That’s why I like Reflections on Brushstrokes. It shows all of the paint and it has the glass in front, and the canvas and brushstrokes, so it encompasses all that is art – more or less.” — Roy Lichtenstein
Reflections on a Brushstroke, 1990, is widely considered Roy Lichtenstein’s magnum opus, which places him firmly in the canon of American art history. Conjoining two of his favourite practices - pop art and brushstrokes - Reflections on a Brushstroke is a pinnacle moment in the artist’s career where his bold comic book characters and classic American iconography are channelled into quietly evocative, painterly language that still reaches mainstream culture.
As if following on from the abstract expressionists of the 50’s American art scene, such as Jackson Pollock, who elevated brushstrokes as the focus point of the picture, Lichtenstein revolutionises the brushstroke: here by placing solid strokes in a new syntax over his signature ben day dots.
“Brushstrokes are almost a symbol of art. The Brushstrokes paintings also resembles Abstract Expressionism. Of course visible brushstrokes in a painting convey a sense of grand gesture; but in my hands, the brushstrokes become a depiction of a grand gesture.” commented Roy Lichtenstein in A Review of My Work Since 1961, 1995 .
In Reflections on a Brushstroke, Lichtenstein plays with notions of abstraction and reflection; we, the viewer, engage with the print as if viewing it under a refracted glass pane, simultaneously at a distant from the image but drawn in by the brushstrokes beneath the print. The diagonal stripes and ben day dots seamlessly blend into the surface punctuated by the primary coloured brushstrokes - to keep looking at the artwork is to feel oneself caught in an optical illusion.
Reflections on a Brushstroke continues to influence contemporary artists both in the way it translates pop art into formalist concepts but also its referential look at some of the most defining art movements of the past century.
