Yellow Vase, 1991, is one of the most sophisticated prints from Roy Lichtenstein’s Interior series created later in his career. This signed lithograph, woodcut and screenprint in colours was manufactured as part of a limited edition of 60. A graphic depiction of an everyday interior scene, under Lichtenstein’s pop art vision, is elevated into a visually engaging composition that creates commentary on the relationship between art and beauty in everyday life.The simple domestic set up includes familiar home decor: a large glass top table, sofa, and yellow vase with flowers punctuating the picture. Lichtenstein elevates the composition from a mundane but recognisable domestic scene into a visually compelling image by playing with perception: he creates a background in black and white graphics with delineated lines and ben day dots so the image gains spatiality and new dimension.Lichtenstein gives the image his pop art rendering, punctuating the simplicity of the image with the yellow vase, green flowers, red ashtray and vivid blue background. He self references his own Mirror and Reflection series in the refracted glass coffee table and his Landscapes series with the dark green plants.
