Roy Lichtenstein’s Reclining Nude, 1980 is part of his seven print Expressionist Woodcut series and is the first time he experimented with creating his favoured female figures in the nude. (He later went on to create the Nude series, 1994). The signed print is an edition of 50; created from woodcut with embossing on arches cover paper.
The sophistication of Lichtenstein’s artwork beyond his pop art genre is evident in the Reclining Nude: he references old masters, such as Matisse’s Reclining Nude, as well as the art movements, Constructivism and German Expressionism (on which the whole series is based) and art history tropes, the female nude, all whilst translating them into his own visual pop art language. By focusing all attention on the surface area of the print, Lichtenstein purposely distances his work from the original emotive Expressionist artworks.
Although Lichtenstein’s distinctive bright pop colours, delineated graphic black outlines and diagonal pictorial lines are instantly recognisable, in this series he abandons his signature ben day dots in favour of exaggerated wood grain patterns, drawing attention to the surface of the work.
The print positions this female character central to the image by focusing on her facial features: we do not need to see her full curvilinear figure but can feel the essence of her nude female form. By cropping into her facial expressions, the viewer is left to derive the emotional interior of this female figure: bright blonde locks, dark lips with a left hand covering the right side of her face - a sign of sensuality or despair? Either way she is vulnerable to a society that marginalises female voices.
