    Composition 11, 1996, is the second of a four print series, Composition, Lichtenstein created as a visual love letter to music, one of his lifelong passions. Whereas Composition 1 captures an imaginary music sheet in its entirety, Composition II hints at abstraction in its process. 
    Lichtenstein liberates the usually rigorous and parallel lines of musical staves and scores into bold, curving and looping waves: his creative and improvisatory depiction of these notes is a homage to the freedom of the vibrant New York jazz clubs the artist visited in the 1930’s.  
    Beyond the immediate references to musical composition, Lichtenstein uses this Composition II work to reference other art historical movements, including abstract expressionism and cubism.  The print explores notions of form, colour and line through the artistic elevation of the notes and staves. 
    Lichtenstein plays on perspective in Composition II: although the viewer seemingly is looking at a mechanical artwork, we feel a sense of emotion and narrative within the immediacy of the print. The viewer is free to project their own romance, drama and sensation onto the artwork bringing to mind the recent film depiction of genius composer, Leonard Bernstein. 
    In Composition II, Lichtenstein explores the interplay between art and representation to break the boundaries of what contemporary art can be.
