Roy Lichtenstein American Indian Theme III (Corlett 162)
"American Indian Theme III is from Lichtenstein’s 80’s era work when he re-referenced the Native Americans he had always been interested in, from a more sophisticated viewpoint, bringing in references to surrealism and other art historical movements through his pop art lens."
In American Indian Theme III, 1980, the third print from the American Indian series, Roy Lichtenstein dramatically depicts the fierce motifs associated with native American Indians particularly by Western civilisations and mass media. American Indian Theme III is from Lichtenstein’s 80’s era work when he re-referenced the Native Americans he had always been interested in, from a more sophisticated viewpoint, bringing in references to surrealism and other art historical movements through his pop art lens. The viewer can with first glance discern familiar motifs: the vast American desert is symbolised through bushy shrubs and cacti, totem poles, textural materials, beadwork and quills. There is a suggestion of human presence: a big open eye, framed by an arched eyebrow, resting on a set of lips flipped to the side. To a viewer, the probing eye central to the image brings the familiar evil eye symbol to mind; yet unlike in Western appropriations, Native American cultures believe the evil eye to symbolise protection, wielding off bad luck or injury. In the print, Lichtenstein creates a sense of spatiality by placing one object in front of the other, weaving the rope in and out of the totem pole’s zig-zagged right edge. The colour palette is more earthy than the artist’s usual pop art tones - forest green, navy, burgundy - setting the mood of the image. One of the most dramatic prints of the American Indian Theme series, Lichtenstein plays with stark forms in American Indian Theme III, as if to highlight the savage depiction of Native Americans in the Western consciousness. These are indigenous communities whose lives are defined by a desire to find cultural belonging.By distilling these tropes through his pop art characteristics, Lichtenstein conflates traditional notions of Native American communities and critiques mass cultural misrepresentation. -
