American Indian Theme 1V is the fourth print of the American Indian Theme series by Roy Lichtenstein centred around his interest and fondness for the Native American tribes and communities, who he personally observed and spent time with.A signed print in an edition of 50, American Indian Theme 1V is less complex in composition than the other prints in the series: the focus of the artwork looks like a thick tree trunk or even the bottom of a decorative totem pole. The wooden surface is made up of facial features; wood carvings indicate tiny square eyes, a downturned mouth and cross shaped nose. Similar to the intensely gazing eye of American Indian Theme 111, Lichtenstein portrays this character with a fierce expression fixed across his face playing into the violent stereotypes with which Western civilisations always portray the native american tribes.The surface of the wood shape is created through maroon coloured threads poking through holes located alongside the left hand side with bright yellow braided rope wrapped through the zig zag right edge; these rope and ragged edge details are recurring elements within the American Indian Theme series.By distilling the cliched artefacts associated with indigenous communities into a pop art style created through mass produced printed material, Lichtenstein critiques the cultural misrepresentation of native american communities. -
