"The simple colour palette allows the boldness of the bright yellow hue to pop against the black Benday dots, which gives a strong tonal contrast"
Pyramids, 1969 is a signed lithograph print taken from Roy Lichtenstein’s seminal series, Pyramids, which he created between 1968-69. In Pyramids, 1969, the form and composition is reflective of a breakthrough in style for the artist, moving into more angular, conceptual and refined artistic territory, than his earlier comic book artworks and graphic pop depictions of famous figures.
It’s important to remember the new movement that were sweeping the art landscape during that period: Minimalism. Nor was Lichtenstein’s use of Pyramids by which to disseminate his new pared back composition, scaled up features and exact design an arbitrary choice. Famous artists of the minimalist movement at the time favoured the pyramid, such as Sol De Witt who made outdoor pyramids from blocks of stone and indoor versions in cubes of wood.
Although refined in composition, Lichtenstein’s Pyramids bear his pop art trademarks: sweeping areas of ben day dots, solid block colour, delineated graphic edges. In Pyramids, Lichtenstein creates a yellow monochromatic hinterland set the ben day dotted ground to highlight these abstract geometric shapes; so the pictures become like graphic reductions of landscapes created through the artist’s pop art prism.
Lichtenstein distils such recognisable objects as the Egyptian pyramids with graphic immediacy, he once said: ‘All painters take a personal attitude toward painting. What makes each object in the work is that it is organised by that artist’s vision. The style and the content are also different from anyone else’s. They are unified by the point of view – mine. This is the big tradition of art.’
