    Roy Lichtenstein’s American Indian Theme I is the first print from the American Indian series in which he revises the stereotypical depiction of Native Americans in mainstream culture, instead celebrating the motifs and heritage of the indigenous community. The print is an edition of 50 created from woodcut on handmade Suzuki paper. 
    A graphic composition of hard edged shapes and bold colours, American Indian Theme I utilises various geographical sources of native american design and fully abstracts the three dimensional symbols from their original contexts. The viewer can vaguely discern some of the inanimate objects associated with these indigenous communities: from tribal ornaments and weapons to animals and even tribesmen. Lichtenstein purposely renders them strange and familiar at once, as if to challenge our perception of subculture tribes. 
    Lichtenstein’s pop art signatures are immediately recognisable: bold primary colours, strong black delineated lines and diagonal pictorial stripes. Yet by nodding to the surrealist movement and other art historical forms of composition, Lichtenstein highlights the importance of the native american art movement by connecting it to European modernist traditions.
