'Based on the 1910 revolutionary bronze sculpture, Sleeping Muse, by Romanian sculptor, Constantin Brancusi, Two Paintings, Sleeping Muse is Lichtenstein’s version rendered with elegant lines into his own pop art design.'

Roy Lichtenstein’s Two Paintings: Sleeping Muse continues his conflation of high and low art culture that permeates all the prints in the Painting series.
Based on the 1910 revolutionary bronze sculpture, Sleeping Muse, by Romanian sculptor, Constantin Brancusi, Two Paintings, Sleeping Muse is Lichtenstein’s version rendered with elegant lines into his own pop art design. Lichtenstein actually created two pieces based on the Brancusi sculpture in close succession: Sleeping Muse, a singular sculptural work and this Two Paintings: Sleeping Muse pop art print.
Unlike the comic book girls of his 60’s era pop art work, Lichtenstein takes a classical muse as his focus for this print. He respectfully takes the Brancusi image but simplifies it down to reduced pictorial features: the delicately closed eyes and slender lips are elegantly conceived through sweeping abstract lines, as the artist creates his own seductive version of the sleeping beauty trope featured throughout art history.
Lichtenstein plays with this trope further by bringing his sleeping muse into the distinctive framework of his pop art compositions: the traditional sleeping beauty from antiquity is juxtaposed with pure pop characteristics - bold primary colours, black delineated lines and hanging pop art in the background.
Two Paintings: Sleeping Muse is illustrative of Lichtenstein’s desire to create a dialogue with the history of art whilst simultaneously commenting on contemporary visual culture. He wanted his artwork to be part of a larger tradition:
“The big tradition, I think, is unity and I have that in mind; and with that, you know you could break all the other traditions—all the other so-called rules, because they’re stylistic...Unity in the work itself depends on unity of the artist’s vision...I’ve never thought of my work as anti-art, because I’ve always thought it was organized; it’s just that I thought it was a different style and therefore a different content as well”  Roy Lichtenstein
