    Painting on Canvas, 1980 is a signed woodcut, lithograph, screenprint and collage on Arches 88 paper from Roy Lichtenstein’s elaborate Paintings series. The title of the series is in itself a clue to the themes of the artworks, Lichtenstein wittily referring to his commercial printmaking as ‘Paintings’: in Painting on Canvas, the artist mixes hand and machine made patterns to achieve the conceptual effect.
    Painting on Canvas continues the central motif of the eight part series: the juxtaposition of fictitious picture frames. On first glance the double edging of the ‘frames’ in the composition distorts the viewer’s perspective - is this a print, a painting, a mirage. The artist refines the formal intricacy of his composition, whilst retaining his mass produced, industrial aesthetic: his pop art signatures of vivid colours, ben day dots and graphic outlines are contrasted with evocative, painterly strokes in pastel tones, which could belong in an Abstract Expressionist painting. Lichtenstein also explores new materials, including metallic foil, and to contain the interwoven colours,  the artist envelops the brushstrokes in a classic silver frame.
