“I really got to love the athletes because they are the really big stars.”  Andy Warhol.

This portfolio is a display of one of the greatest athletes of all time: Muhammad Ali. The portfolio is made up of four prints, all depicting the revered Ali in a variety of poses to show the different sides to the figure. However, this portfolio stands out from the rest, as Warhol was so drawn to the figure of Muhammad Ali that he created a separate portfolio of solely Ali, showcasing the poise and stoicism of the boxer and activist.

In this screenprint, Warhol depicts Ali from an unusual angle. The boxer does not look at us, instead, he dips his head to the left, so only the outline of his nose and cheeks are visible. Despite this obscuring of his face, the figure is immediately identifiable as Muhammad Ali, showing the influence Ali has in popular and celebrity culture. Perhaps, this angle reflects his reflexes within the boxing ring, as he was known for keeping his head low throughout the fights. In this print, it seems as if he as been knocked by a punch and is about to throw a counter one in return. The brown and black outline of Ali stands out against the dark blue background, making it seem as if he is emerging from the shadows. Details of Ali’s features are exemplified through subtle black lines across his face and chest, adding depth within the two-dimensional print. This print was created at the height of Ali’s career, after he had won his third heavyweight championship title after a three-year hiatus after he was on probation for refusing to be drafted. The reference photograph was taken when Ali invited Warhol to his Pennsylvania training camp, after many failed attempts to get in contact with the boxer. This elusiveness transpires in the screenprints, as Ali comes across with a god-like prowess, elevating him to a status higher than that of the viewer, which exactly the root of celebrity worship. This portfolio is eye-catching and adored, as it immortalises Muhammed Ali as an unlikely Pop Art icon.
