‘Art has to be something that makes you scratch your head.’ Hockney

Conversation in the Studio by David Hockney is a signed and dated lithograph from the artist’s largest series, Moving Focus, 1984, and is part of an edition of 45. Ironically titled Conversation in the Studio, the playful print contains no figures in it, but the positioning of the central chairs indicates it is the inanimate objects which are indeed in conversation.

In Conversation in the Studio, Hockney’s unique colourist vision is rendered through a  primary colour palette and a naïve drawing style, which is reminiscent of children’s books: the scene is simple, including the two ‘talking’ chairs, table, and two soft pouffes which make up the central focus of the image. The rest of the room is constructed with both bold pencilled in outlines of wall hangings, a wooden beam, as well as a coloured in yellow floor and a shut door.
Conversation in the Studio is part of David Hockney’s 80’s oeuvre where he segued between many different creative forms – photographic collage, landscape paintings, interior scene sketches and stage design – and evolved his own artmaking style. Conversation in the Studio evokes many of his new techniques and tropes, including bold colourways and an exploration of space and movement – hence the series title, Moving Focus.
In this print, Hockney’s loose arrangement of the furniture and slanted walls distort the viewer’s perspective: is this scene so naïve after all or is the tilted room angle suggestive that the scene is constructed on a moving ship vessel?
Hockney’s technical skill as an artist and colourist is evident in Conversation in the Studio: in dialogue with his own work, Hockney continues to evolve and push the boundaries of his visual language. He takes a seemingly simple image and drawing style and not only creates a timeless artwork but one that continues to beguile the observer with each viewing.
