David Hockney An Image of Celia (M.C.A.T 277)

An Image of Celia (1984) is a lithograph by David Hockney from his influential Moving Focus series of 26 prints. The work portrays Celia Birtwell, one of Hockney’s closest friends, collaborators, and most enduring muses. Throughout his career, Hockney returned repeatedly to portraiture, often depicting people within his immediate social circle. In this print, however, he reimagines traditional portraiture through an experimental visual language that incorporates fragmentation, bold colour, and shifting viewpoints. Drawing inspiration from modernist art movements, Hockney creates a portrait that is both recognisable and abstract, capturing Birtwell’s presence while simultaneously challenging conventional ideas of representation.

  • About David Hockney An Image of Celia (M.C.A.T 277)

In An Image of CeliaDavid Hockney portrays Celia Birtwell reclining across an armchair in a relaxed yet stylised pose. Her elegant green shoes and patterned clothing stand out against the darker interior background, hinting at the bold textile designs for which Birtwell is renowned. The composition fragments her figure into multiple sections, giving the impression that the portrait is constructed from several viewpoints. Her face, set within a square-like frame, remains recognisable through distinctive features such as her bright eyes, dark lashes, and softly coloured lips. The chair appears oversized in relation to her body, further destabilising the sense of proportion. Rich layers of colour and texture give the print a painterly quality, emphasising Hockney’s interest in blending drawing, printmaking, and collage-like composition.
