Portrait of Mother II (M.C.A.T 282)

Portrait of Mother II (1985) is a signed lithograph by David Hockney and the second of two portraits of his mother included in the experimental Moving Focus series. The work depicts Laura Hockney, a subject the artist portrayed many times throughout his career in drawings, paintings, and prints. While Portrait of Mother I presents a more naturalistic image, this second portrait explores abstraction and shifting perspectives. By adapting ideas from modern art movements, Hockney transforms a familiar and intimate subject into a more experimental composition, merging personal portraiture with broader investigations into perception and representation.

  • About David Hockney Portrait of Mother II

In Portrait of Mother IIDavid Hockney depicts Laura Hockney seated quietly in profile, resting in a comfortable armchair. She wears a deep blue jumper with a delicate frilled collar, echoing the clothing seen in the earlier portrait from the series. Her hands are gently clasped together, and her eyes appear closed, suggesting a peaceful, reflective moment. However, Hockney disrupts the traditional portrait format by abstracting the sitter’s face into a geometric, cube-like form. This stylised treatment alters the viewer’s perception, encouraging them to consider the subject from multiple viewpoints rather than a single realistic angle. Despite this visual fragmentation, the gentle colour palette of blues, browns, and whites maintains a sense of warmth and quiet intimacy within the composition.
