David Hockney Views of Hotel Well III (M.C.A.T 274)

View of Hotel Well III (1984) is a lithograph by David Hockney and the final work in a three-part sequence exploring the courtyard of the Hotel Romano Angeles near Acatlán. The print forms part of Hockney’s experimental Moving Focusseries, in which he investigated new ways of representing space and perception. Inspired by his unexpected stay while travelling to Mexico City, Hockney repeatedly returned to the hotel as a subject. Through multiple viewpoints and compositions, he transformed the modest building into a vehicle for exploring ideas of place, perspective, and visual experience.

  • About David Hockney Views of Hotel Well III

In View of Hotel Well IIIDavid Hockney again depicts the interior courtyard of the hotel but from a noticeably more distant vantage point than in the earlier prints of the sequence. The composition appears almost triangular in structure, as Hockney uses an unusual reverse perspective to reshape the architectural space. Familiar elements remain visible, including the paved courtyard, the portico supported by blue columns, and glimpses of greenery and cacti surrounding the building. Yet the spatial arrangement appears curved and subtly distorted, creating a sense that the viewer’s viewpoint is shifting or moving. Rather than presenting a stable architectural study, Hockney constructs a dynamic image that feels fluid and slightly disorienting, encouraging viewers to reconsider how space is perceived within a two-dimensional artwork.
