    “I always notice flowers,”

This print is Andy Warhol’s bold admission to the art historical oeuvre of a flower still life. This screenprint was created in 1970 as part of a wider portfolio of flower prints. Each print in the series depicts the same picture of four hibiscus on grass, but each one is appropriated in a different colour, each one more surreal and unnatural than its predecessor. The screen print was first exhibited in 1964 (before the full portfolio was created) at the Leo Castelli gallery, and has continued to become one of Warhol’s most treasured portfolios.

Warhol once said “Pop is just taking the outside and putting it on the inside or taking the inside and putting it on the outside”. This portfolio is the perfect representation of Warhol’s artistic vision: transforming ‘low art’ subject matter into high art. In this screenprint, Warhol has reduced the flowers down to their most basic form and shape, stripping them of detail and realism. Warhol solely leaves the naked form of each flower, and yet they are still both recognisable as flowers, and beautiful. Warhol manipulated the image so it could become the perfect pop art piece. Firstly, he cropped the image to remove and incomplete or imperfect flowers, then he rotated he upper right corner so it worked as a square format. Finally, Warhol  converted the image into black and white, so he was able to add whichever layers of colour he wanted via the screen-printing technique.

Throughout his own artistic oeuvre, Warhol often explores notions of celebrity for artistic inspiration. In this series, Warhol is demanding that we take as much notice to flowers and our surroundings as we do to celebrities. Warhol has transformed the flower into a mighty pop art icon.
