    “I always notice flowers,”

“Sometimes something can look beautiful just because it’s different in some way from the other things around it. One red petunia in a window box will look very beautiful if all the rest of them are white, and vice-versa.” Andy Warhol

This screenprint is one of ten variations of Andy Warhol’s Flower’s prints, published in 1970 for his flowers portfolio, after being created in 1964. “I always notice flowers,” he said in his 1988 book, Andy Warhol’s Party Book. Warhol took one of the most quintessential subjects of art history – the flower – and gave it a pop art makeover. Created amongst the ‘flower-power’ culture America in the 1960, Warhol shows us he is always aware of what is culturally significant, allowing him to represent the quintessential America of his day.

This screenprint stands out from the others in the series, perhaps because at first glance it seems the most understated. The grass is an almost-realistic shade of green, which grounds the painting in a more believable way. This contrasts with the vividly coloured flowers placed in front, made of an array of slightly different shades of yellow. This contrast is more muted than some of the other prints in this series, perhaps due to the similar in colour between each flower, and the darkness of the green. The overarching feel of this print is that it is a pastiche of nature, adding an unusual and eye catching addition to the history of flowers in art.

Despite the transient nature of a real flower, this screenprint will never decay. It is no surprise that this series is one of the most cherished of all of Warhol’s oeuvre. The timeless beauty of flowers as a subject matter is captured spectacularly in this portfolio, and this screenprint is guaranteed to never lose this magnetism.
