    Yosemite Suite No.9 is one of David Hockney’s Ipad drawings of the spectacular Yosemite National Park from his groundbreaking Yosemite Suite Series. The first time he had used the digital medium to create one of his characteristic colourful landscape images, Yosemite Suite No.9 is similar to Yosemite Suite No. 8 in that he focuses on the colossal trees in the park. However, in Yosemite Suite No. 9 we only have a cropped view of the leafy evergreen tree with the branches fading into the sky and the granite cliffs in the hinterland of the picture.
     
    Yosemite Suite No. 9 reflects back to the Impressionist hand of Monet, the mountain landscape is softer in this artwork than his typical graphic depictions, full of shadow, light and texture.
    Hockney’s acute eye for detail and colour are evident in that he manages to create the scene through smudging, dots, lines and swirls: by contrasting the leafy green tree against the serene blue sky and swirling white clouds, he creates depth and dimension to the image as if the viewer is staring up at the immensity of the Yosemite National Park splendour themselves.
    Hockney’s portrayal of the Yosemite National Park transcends place: with the visual splendour of his image, he encourages a viewer to meditate on the power of nature and the miraculous ecosystems, renewing and rebirthing with each season.
