'...Hockney gives us a glimmer of hope with bright blue skies in the background, that suggest the fleeting snow storm will soon end.'

David Hockney’s Snow is one of two prints from his creative The Weather Series, which depicts the snow (see Snow Without Colour). In Snow, Hockney depicts an eponymous weather condition on a flat two-dimensional surface but creates an emotion through the print as if the viewer is immersed in the snow themselves.
In Snow, Hockney creates a discourse with artistic traditions; the image resembles the childlike naivete of his early drawings, yet also pays homage to the 18th century Japanese artists, Hokusai and Hiroshige. Both the Japanese artists worked with the woodblock based, Ukiyo-e technique, examining the grandeur of nature and the weather elements through the most precise printing techniques.
Snow is a folkloric like depiction of undulating hills coated in white snow; whilst the few small rock boulders in front of the picture dramatize the heavy falling of snow, Hockney gives us a glimmer of hope with bright blue skies in the background, that suggest the fleeting snow storm will soon end.
Hockney manages to create textural depth and spatial awareness in this two-dimensional surface, as if we can feel the cold snow in our hands, before the passing seasons change.
