'...he manages to evoke a sense of emotion through the misty scene, as if we are immersed in the transient weather hoping for the mist to clear, arguably a metaphor for the ebbs and flow of life itself.'

David Hockney’s Ten Palm Trees in the Mist is one of three prints from the artist’s innovative ten print, The Weather Series, which focuses on the classic palm tree iconography of Los Angeles.
Art historian and curator, Robert Grunenberg, commented on the portrayal of palm trees by art luminaries such as Hockney, Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari as, ‘The palm tree has become the symbol for California as this paradise on earth, the symbol for the America dream.’
Hockney’s idea to depict the ephemerality of weather conditions came to him on a trip to LA but on getting there he realised ‘Los Angeles doesn’t have any weather’ so ended up creating most of the lithographs from the famed Californian printers, Gemini Studio. Unlike Lightning, Rain, Snow, this artwork is instantly relatable to Hockney’s beloved California, the LA highway lined by a row of identical palm trees visible through the misty weather.
‘It takes a long time to make it simple,’ Hockney commented of his process: he evolved his artistic expression in The Weather Series by merging lithograph and print for the first time. Working onto the lithographic stone, he mixes cool tones, including soft blues and greens creating a sepia background to reflect the heavy atmospheric mist.
Hockney’s creative eye is visible in Ten Palm Trees in the Mist, he manages to evoke a sense of emotion through the misty scene, as if we are immersed in the transient weather hoping for the mist to clear, arguably a metaphor for the ebbs and flow of life itself.
