David Hockney The Gospel Singing (Good People) Madison Square Garden (M.C.A.T 15)

The Gospel Singing (Good People), Madison Square Gardens (1963) is a signed etching by David Hockney from his celebrated 16-part series A Rake’s Progress. Inspired by the narrative cycle created by William Hogarth, Hockney reimagines the eighteenth-century moral tale through the experiences of a young artist visiting New York City in the early 1960s. The work draws on Hockney’s own time in the city while studying at the Royal College of Art. Blending autobiography with satire and symbolism, the series charts a journey of discovery, temptation, and identity within the cultural energy of modern America.

  • About David Hockney The Gospel Singing (Good People) Madison Square Garden

This print captures a moment of musical exuberance centred on the celebrated gospel singer Mahalia Jackson performing at Madison Square Garden. Elevated on a platform, the singer proclaims “Hallelujah” to an enthusiastic crowd, while bold text such as “Heaven” amplifies the uplifting atmosphere of the performance. In contrast to the melancholy tone of many plates in A Rake’s Progress, this scene introduces a rare moment of communal joy and spiritual release. Yet Hockney subtly complicates the celebration through shadowy figures in the foreground wearing ties inscribed with “God is Love,” creating an ambiguous, slightly ominous presence. Through expressive line and symbolic imagery, David Hockneyjuxtaposes faith, spectacle, and social commentary, suggesting that moments of belonging and liberation can exist even within a narrative of uncertainty and personal struggle.
