In Front of House Looking East is one of four depictions by David Hockney of Le Grande Cour, the 17th century rustic country home in Beuvron-en-Auge, North-West France, described as ‘quintessentially Norman’ as it is situated in the unspoilt Normandy region.

In Front of House Looking East is one from a series of 116 Ipad drawings and inkjet on paper works from The Arrival of Spring: Normandy created during the anxiety of the Covid lockdown in 2020 and capturing the vibrant changing seasons from his house and garden surroundings.

The rustic 17th century home can be seen from the East angle, with deeply sloping roof, presumably inside the ceilings are low, and small shuttered windows poking through from each room of the house. The brown shades of the house are contrasted with the vibrant lush green ‘brushstrokes’ of the verdant gardens: a manicured lawn area with planted, blossoming trees in the background. The lawn area features a solid oak tree with a ladder propped up leading to the tree house reminiscent of playful childhood days. The neat green lawn seeps down to a grassy area, at the bottom lies a small lake, depicted in bright blue brushstrokes and shadows to create depth.

Although the house depicted in In Front of House Looking East could be a rustic home anywhere in the countryside, Hockney elevates it with his distinctive use of bright colour, playful style and focus on perspective. Hockney’s mastery in In Front of House Looking East and indeed the other prints depicting his Normandy home is his ability to capture the essence of the picturesque location through his own unique artistic lens and visual language.
