‘This is a real new medium. So much variety is possible. You can’t overwork this because it’s not a real surface. And you can put anything on anything: a bright, bright blue on top of an intense yellow.’ David Hockney

In Beuvron-en-Auge, Panorama, an inkjet print on paper, David Hockney gives the viewer a birds-eye view of his local village in the Normandy region, which has remained ‘quintessentially Norman.’ Now Hockney’s full time place of residence, he elevates a place once considered quiet and staid, with colour, vibrancy and passion. Hockney has found his ‘paradise’ in the rural area of North-West France, a delightful village full of half-timbered houses, antique dealers, local producers, as well as its famed ‘cider route.’
With his characteristic playful style, Hockney depicts the oval centred square of the village, which is ringed by a charming ensemble of multicoloured half timbered houses, including the yellow and brown sixteenth century Vieux Manoir.  In Beuvron-en-Auge, Panorama, unusually for his depiction of landscapes and place, Hockney includes some of the local artisans and people in this artwork, giving it intimacy and familiarity.
He creates a lively portrayal of the peaceful village by contrasting the distinct regional Norman architecture in rustic red and brown shades against the verdant green picturesque fields in the distance. Returning to the play with form, line and perspective that dominated much of his Moving Focus series (see Andipa viewing rooms), Hockney creates the scene through a schematized composition (see Hotel Acatlan: Two Weeks Later) focusing on precision of line and simplicity in a bright colour palette that could be an image from a child’s colour book.
In Beuvron En Auge Panorama, Hockney depicts his enthusiasm for the new Ipad technology: the artwork is instantly recognisable as a Hockney, with his signature visual language, that has defined his artwork for over 60 years, yet evolves through the modern digital medium.
‘This is a real new medium. So much variety is possible. You can’t overwork this because it’s not a real surface. And you can put anything on anything: a bright, bright blue on top of an intense yellow.’
