Electric Chair (F & S. II 78)
As Warhol himself once said, “the more you look at the same exact thing, the more the meaning goes away, and the better and emptier you feel.”
During the 1960s and into the 1970s, Andy Warhol became preoccupied with the notion of death within mainstream society, and the media circus that ensues.
The repetition of the motif of the chair throughout the series mirrors the repetition of violent images within the media. With each image of this symbol of death, our pathos to the whole thing dissipates. As Warhol himself once said, “the more you look at the same exact thing, the more the meaning goes away, and the better and emptier you feel.” This screenprint adds a layer of suspense and mystery to an already morbid and unsettling series.
The series highlights the hypocrisy in 20th-century attitudes toward death and disaster. The print's deadpan presentation, stripped of moral judgement or emotion, starkly contrasts with its grim subject matter, which is ironically depicted in bright, cheerful colours. This juxtaposition amplifies the print's provocative impact. Warhol's relentless repetition of the electric chair symbol throughout the series underscores the desensitisation that pervades modern life and media consumption.
