"He turns the natural into the unnatural and the everyday into something otherworldly."

Kiku is one of three screenprints created by Warhol in 1983 from the Kiku portfolio for the Gendai Hanga Center, a museum in Tokyo. This portfolio offers a rare and striking glimpse into Warhol's exploration of Asian aesthetics. Each print showcases the chrysanthemum, or 'kiku' in Japanese, depicted in a colour palette of dusky pinks, oranges and blues.

The chrysanthemum flower is deeply embedded in Japanese culture, serving both as an official symbol and a decorative motif. It appears as the emblem on Japanese passports and is often used as an applique on kimono garments.

Warhol, a master of reinterpreting cultural symbols, takes the widely recognised Japanese chrysanthemum and transforms it through his unique artistic lens. He turns the natural into the unnatural and the everyday into something otherworldly.
