Details of Renaissance Paintings (Paolo Uccello, George and the Dragon, 1460) (F & S II.327)
"By picking and choosing certain details from Uccello’s painting to depict and presenting them in a contemporary context, Warhol critiques the art world's obsession with originality and authenticity."
Andy Warhol's Paolo Uccello, George and the Dragon, 1460 is part of his Details of Renaissance Paintings series, created in 1984. This print engages with ideas about how art and history are reappropriated in modern media culture. Uccello’s Saint George and the Dragon, once a powerful religious and cultural narrative, is reduced to a simple, decorative element depicting neither the titular George nor the entirety of the titular dragon, in Warhol’s hands, mimicking the ways media strips context to create easily digestible images. By picking and choosing certain details from Uccello’s painting to depict and presenting them in a contemporary context, Warhol critiques the art world's obsession with originality and authenticity.
Warhol’s choice of colour within this print is perhaps the brightest and boldest of the series. The princess is depicted with flaming orange hair, complete with blue skin and a dusty pink dress. The dragon’s wings are rendered in an impressive array of bright red, green and pink, outlined in a cyan blue. Warhol’s choice of colour adds a further fantastical element, providing a Pop Art makeover to both the original painting and story.
Warhol’s use of Renaissance art underscores his fascination with repetition and reproduction, key elements of his work which can be seen throughout his oeuvre in other series such as Campbell’s soup and his Marilyn portfolio.
