Andy Warhol’s Black and White Flowers series is a portfolio of 10 screenprints. Each flower was based on an image from Interpretive Flower Designs, a wallpaper catalogue. The hand drawn style of this print echoes Warhol’s work from the 1950s, in his early days as an illustrator. The flower sketches within this series are the same as the Flowers (Hand Coloured) portfolio, however these prints sacrifice colour for an emphasis on line and composition.
These prints stand out against Warhol’s oeuvre, as he moves away from the gaudy, artificial nature of his previous approaches to flowers, such as his Flower portfolio from 1970. This series stands out as a more delicate and thematically distinct work compared to much of Warhol's other subjects, highlighting his ability to experiment with diverse methods. Unlike his portfolios characterized by screenprints with bold, machine-printed lines and vibrant colors that deliberately obscure the artist's hand, this series feels more intimate, reflecting Warhol's personal touch and appearing less like the output of a printing press.
