Study of The Entrance by David Hockney is a sweeping depiction of the driveway to his new home, Le Grande Coeur in the Beuvron-en-Auge village, in Normandy, France. Another chapter in the adventurous life of David Hockney, arguably the greatest artist of the 20th and 21st century, his artwork has depicted his life from his hometown in Yorkshire to the bright lights of California and now his ‘paradise’ Normandy. He moved in 2019 entranced by its rustic simplicity, the vision of sunset at the Le Havre docks, and a visit in his wheelchair to the medieval textile masterpiece, the Bayeux Tapestry.
Le Grande Coeur is a 17th century rustic thatched cottage set in a 12-acre plot, in which Hockney could revel even deeper into his devotion to art, isolated by the bucolic surroundings and vibrant nature of his Normandy home. Richly influenced by Monet’s Impressionist landscape paintings of the nearby Giverny area, Hockney uses his home, environs and interiors as central motifs in a series that later became ‘The Arrival of Spring: Normandy,’ depicting the changing seasons.
In Study of the Entrance he creates a vibrant depiction of the wonders of nature during the spring season through the lens of his driveway at that time: Hockney uses his playful, bright use of colour – rich greens and blues depict the manicured lawn and smooth gravel drive, in contrast to the multitude of trees dotted along the path and garden, where leaves are repairing themselves from winter damage, taking in the sunlight and preparing for the growth process.
In Study of Entrance, Hockney creates a dialogue with his earlier works, (2005) where he sat en plein air depicting the quaint hills and rolling countryside of his Yorkshire hometown, Bridlington. He creates an intimacy of an ‘entrance’ that could be anywhere in the countryside, revelling in the joys of nature, rebirth and the very act of art-making itself.
