Action Picture (F & S II.375)
The original image that Warhol drew his inspiration from was the painting by Charles Schreyvogel Breaking Through the Lines
Action Picture is a dramatic and visually stimulating screenprint from Andy Warhol’s original Cowboys and Indians series, created in 1986. This year was perhaps the most prolific year of creation for Warhol, and he later continued the portfolio the same year, including a variety of both Native American and Hollywood Western imagery. Whilst Warhol always said his art was politically neutral, this portfolio overtly presents us with the problematic nature of the West’s portrayal of Native American culture, through appropriation within Hollywood western movies.
Adrenaline and action pour out this print. We are placed in the middle of a battle scene, as horses and Native Americans charge towards us. The dynamism and action of the screenprint is exemplified through the use of a bold red background. The horses and figures are depicted in a black outline, but Warhol maintains detail through a use of dynamic orange and yellow lines jumping across the canvas. The figures are encased in blocks of green, yellow and pink, freezing them in a moment of action. Warhol use of hand drawn lines further add to the movement and dynamism of the piece.
The original image that Warhol drew his inspiration from was the painting by Charles Schreyvogel Breaking Through the Lines. It is notable that this is the only print from the portfolio that depicts both the Native Americans and cowboys together within the same artwork. The image is one that seems straight out of a classic Hollywood western film, at a point of action between cowboys and Indians, where the cowboys will inevitably win as Hollywood tells the victor’s narrative, no matter how problematic that might be. Due to this, this print is arguably the most explicit in its questioning of Hollywood tropes and misrepresentation, as it presents as image of both sides of history through the lens of a Hollywood camera. The reality is blurred through the use of colour, perhaps alluding to the way history is blurred through popular culture.
