It was released to coincide with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition, "The Search for Alexander."This screenprint is unique within Warhol’s body of work as it features his first and only subject drawn from antiquity.

Warhol depicts the side profile of a bust of Alexander the Great against a vibrant red background. Warhol uses yellow tones to add texture and depth to the sculpture, adding a sense of realism. Warhol uses red lines to outline Alexander's curls, highlighting the sculpture's most striking features, including the eyes, nose, and lips.

 Warhol reimagines the ancient leader as a contemporary icon, placing him alongside figures like Marilyn Monroe and Mick Jagger. With this piece, Warhol transports an ancient figure firmly into the modern era.
