    Meaning & History
I used to have the same lunch every day, for twenty years, I guess, the same thing over and over again."

Campbell’s Soup Cans I: Chicken Noodle (FS II.45) is a print by the Pop artist Andy Warhol. Produced in 1968 it forms part of Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Can I portfolio. The portfolio contains 10 images of soup cans, such as Chicken Noodle, each being a different flavour. This portfolio has not only become one of his most recognised portfolio of works, but also arguably a quintessential symbol of the Pop Art movement as a whole.

A key aspect that makes Pop Art so recognisable and cohesive as an art movement was the use of advertisement and symbols of consumer culture within the art. This elevated ‘low’ art, such as the Campbell’s soup logo, into a status of ‘high’ art, elevating everyday advertisement material into something iconic. Warhol had a strong admiration, perhaps eve somewhat of an obsession, with the Campbell’s Soup logo. The enduring design, unchanged for years, contributed to its sustained success. Consequently, the Warhol treatment was applied to the soup cans, making them among the some of the first objects to undergo this artistic transformation. Andy found great inspiration in ordinary items such as the lowly soup can. Despite their significant role in our lives, they are frequently disregarded. The soup, being a commonplace grocery store item, is undoubtedly familiar to us all, made even more recognisable by Warhol.

By depicting ordinary items like these soup cans, Warhol reflects the experiences of consumers and citizens at large. Additionally, they serve as a definitive representation of Warhol's distinctive style and his perspective on consumer culture. Warhol identified a sense of reverence in the commonplace objects of consumption, finding something sacred in the ordinary. This perspective allowed him to redefine conventional notions of art, influencing subsequent generations of avant-garde artists. "Campbell’s Soup Cans I: Chicken Noodle" not only astounded the global audience but also played a pivotal role in sparking a new artistic movement destined for enduring recognition in the annals of art history.
