    Meaning & History
Warhol's portrait of New York City council candidate Carter Burden is indicative of the intersection between art and politics.

Carter Burden is a screenprint published by the artist in 1977 that featues candidate for the New York City Council: Carter Burden.

This work follows in the same vein as Warhol’s portraits of other presidential candidates and political figures such as Jimmy Carter, and is indicative of the intersection between art and politics that the artist often found himself at in the seventies. Most interestingly in this portrait, Burden appears in monochrome: atypically, the father of Pop Art has chosen not to brandish him with bright colours. Perhaps this Burden’s classical style and lineage – he hailed from a magnate family, the Vanderbilts, who came to prominence during the Gilded age. Turning slightly and framed in black and white, Burden’s portrait is at once modern and one that would not look out of place next to the silver daguerreotypes of his ancestors.

Warhol would explore politicians in his artworks across his career. Examining the media reach, saturation and reverence that such public figures would provoke other examples include Mao, Edward Kennedy and Lenin.Explore Andy Warhol prints for sale.
