Cologne Cathedral (F & S. II 361)
"Warhol’s use of diamond dust further heightens the dramatics and spectacle of the Cathedral."
Cologne Cathedral is one of 4 prints created by Andy Warhol in 1985. Architecture was not a theme that Warhol usually forayed into, making this print stand out against the rest of his oeuvre.Cologne Cathedral dates back to 1248, playing an intrinsic role in the strength of Christianity in Europe, during both the mediaeval times and into modernity. However, the historical Cathedral has been transformed into something entirely new and modern through Andy Warhol’s reimagining. By reproducing such an iconic landmark into an array of bold reds, yellows and blues, Warhol demonstrates how colour can impact.
While Warhol had always been known for his use of bold colours and graphic outlines, his later work from this period showcases a greater subtlety in colour and layering. In this screenprint, Warhol employed precisely defined lines to highlight the architectural details and texture of Cologne Cathedral. The building becomes almost unrecognisable as itself as Warhol uses a variety of lines and colours, which results in a depiction of the landmark that has never been seen before. Furthermore, Warhol’s use of diamond dust further heightens the dramatics and spectacle of the Cathedral.
