Andy Warhol Cooking Pot (F & S II.1)
Meaning & History"The monochrome print is an extremely early example of Warhol’s innate understanding of the visual language of advertisement and commerce."
Cooking Pot, produced in 1962, is notable for being Warhol’s first print. Published in a portfolio featuring prominent Pop artists, The International Anthology of Contemporary Engraving: The International Avant-Garde (Vol.5), the print appropriates an advertisement for an enamel cooking pot. The viewer’s eye is immediately drawn to the bold and enlarged text – 77¢, which overshadows the object itself. The monochrome print is an extremely early example of Warhol’s innate understanding of the visual language of advertisement and commerce, as well as his use of ‘found’ imagery, which would permeate his career for the next decades.
Cooking Pot, the first catalogued released print in Feldman & Schellmann, is not the only time Warhol would use an image associated with food.Throughout his career, Warhol would lean heavily into the fetishisation of food and mass production most notably and famously through his Campbell’s Soup Can portfolio I and Campbell’s Soup portfolio II.
