Andy Warhol Dollar Sign (4) (F & S II.281)
Meaning & History'I like money on the wall. Say you were going to buy a painting. I think you should take that money, tie it up, and put it on the wall. Then when someone visited you the first thing they would see is money on the wall.’ Andy Warhol
Dollar Sign (4) is a screenprint, part of Warhol's wider Dollar Sign series that bears perhaps the most iconic symbol in the artist's Pop Artist's visual language. Emblematic of capitalism and commercialism, the dollar is a brash and singular expression of the artist's key concerns.
Four dollar signs are inflated and arranged in rows against a black background, their dual colours and shading evoking the appearance of spray-paint. The currency symbol, removed from its direct representation on a physical note is deconstructed: the viewer is confronted with money as an abstract concept. This is firmly rooted in the period in which Warhol created the series: the beginning of the eighties saw an economic recession, but Ronald Reagan's Economics saw a booming economy and capitalistic mindset.
