Flowers (F & S II.68)
“I always notice flowers,”
“…I looked around the studio and it was all Marilyn and disasters and death,” Henry Geldzahler, art collector and friend of Warhol recalled. “Andy, maybe it’s enough death now.’ He said, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, ‘Well, how about this?’ I opened a magazine to four flowers.” The publication, titled Modern Photography, displayed a photograph of hibiscus flowers taken by Patricia Caulfield, and immediately piqued Andy Warhol’s interest...
However, Warhol’s appropriation of Caulfield’s photograph did not end well. In 1966, Caulfield sued Warhol for his use of her image, and won. Gerard Malanga argues that the legal action against Warhol inspired him to experiment with photography as his own medium, saying “he opted to start taking his own photographs…His entry into photography vis-á-vis his creation of silkscreen paintings was done out of necessity.” Therefore, this series was an essential turning point in Warhol’s artistic journey.
This particular print perfectly encapsulates Warhol’s artistic style. The fluorescent green background acts as a representation of grass or a bush the flowers are resting on, it is animated and bright. This contrasts with the vividness of the flowers, which are less realistic and detailed than others within the series. The flowers become more like singular blocks of colour, creating a flower that is instantly recognisable as pop art first, rather than as a flower.
The flowers portfolio is a key body of work to represent Warhol’s changing nature as an artist. The portfolio represents is uncanny ability to provide a cultural commentary through a simple symbol. Warhol presents the viewer with a multitude of contradictions, between natural and unnatural, light and dark, death and life. He intertwines these opposing themes throughout each screenprint, creating a piece filled with both depth and beauty.
