    “I always notice flowers,”

Flowers was a portfolio published in 1970, after they were originally created in 1964, in the heat of the flower power movement. The inspiration of the series comes from an image taken by Paticia Caulfield from an edition of Modern Photography (1964). Unwittingly, this choice of subject matter resulted in a lawsuit for Warhol over issues of copyright and appropriation. However, this lawsuit resulted in a new burst of creative energy for Warhol, as it pushed him to start using his own photographs for a base material for his screenprints.

This series marked a significant contrast to his most recent portfolios previous to the flowers series. Before this series, he was working on his Death and Disaster series, which depicted images of violence and crisis, and he used subject matter such as electric chairs. His friend and curator Henry Geldzahler told Warhol his recent screenprints were ‘too full of tragedy and despair’, so Warhol turned to perhaps the purest form of inspiration: flowers. However, despite the initial difference, this portfolio is more closely linked to his death and disaster than one might first think. Whilst the death and disaster series represents the tragedy and horror of the fragility of life and human nature, the flowers series acknowledges the beauty of this fragility.

In this portfolio, Warhol has elevated a symbol that is already seen as ‘high art’ into something more than that. Unbound by distinction or hierarchies of art, Warhol is exploring a universally recognised symbol of peace, but alongside his artistic oeuvre filled with depictions of celebrities and consumerism, perhaps Warhol is saying the humble flower deserves as much merit and importance as his other subject matter.
