Goethe (F & S. II 273)
"Warhol reimagines Goethe as a Pop Art icon, imbuing the well known painting with bright purples, blues and reds. "
Warhol's Goethe portfolio, created in 1982,is a series of four screenprints each depicting the poet and writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of Germany's most influential intellectuals and a precursor to the Romantic movement. Warhol drew inspiration for these portraits from Goethe in the Roman Campagna by J.H.W. Tischbein, which Warhol encountered at the Frankfurt Stadel Museum. Warhol reimagines Goethe as a Pop Art icon, imbuing the well known painting with bright purples, blues and reds. In classic Warholian irony, the artist has reinterpreted not only a historical figure but also a renowned painting, weaving them both into the fabric of Pop Art history.
A testament to the work's creativity and significance in Germany—Goethe's revered homeland—Warhol's portraits of Goethe are displayed in the Städel Museum, the very place where he first encountered Tischbein's original painting.
