Meaning & HistoryGolda Meir was an important subject as the only female head of Government in the Middle East and in the context of Warhol's representation of Jewish figures.
Golda Meir is a screenprint produced by the artist in 1973 of Israeli politician and head of government Golda Meir. Uncharacteristically, this portrait is small in scale and printed on felt rather than paper.
The portrait was made as a gift for attendees of the American Friends of the Israel Museum Beaux Arts Ball in New York. It is notable for both its subject – Meir was the only female head of government in the Middle East, as well as in the broader context of Warhol’s representation of Jewish figures. Seven years after this portrait, Warhol held an exhibition at the Jewish Museum in New York, titled ‘Ten Portraits of Jews in the 20th Century’. A portrait of Golda Meir was exhibited alongside Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Sarah Bernhardt, Louis Bernhardt, the Marx brothers, George Gershwin, Franz Kafka and Gertrude Stein.
